With the use flashcards, I will use them to introduce fractions to the third graders. This pre-experience will enable me to distinguish the depth of knowledge the students have previously attained.

By using M&M's to create their own fraction the students will work in groups and identify concepts of fractions: numerator, bar line, and denominator.

Use the M&M's to solve problems that involve addition or subtraction of fractions with common denominators.

Activities & Procedures

Activity One:

Place the students in groups of three or four.

Distribute sandwich bags of the same amounts of M&M's to each kid in every group with which we will use to create fractions.

Each group will be designated their own fraction and on their paperplates the students will portray that fraction with their candy.

Once the fraction is drawn out with the M&M's the students will identify and label the fraction using the proper concepts: numerator, bar line, and denominator.

Activity Two:

Then using the addition and subtraction problems from the mathbook the students will portray that fractions with the M&M's. This will help the student visualize the problem and making it easier to add or subtract. Ex:The book says what is 1/5+3/5. So the students will draw a fraction of 1/5 and 3/5 with their M&M's then display their answer on their paper.

They will then discuss with their group members the answers they came up with and once the group has agreed on the same answer, the students will write their answer on their paper.

We will do five addition problems and five subtraction problems and once this has been completed the students are free to eat their M&M's
